Overview
Solar and battery storage systems are DC systems, and DC protection is different from the AC protection that most engineers know. A photovoltaic array cannot be switched off like a mains supply, and its fault current has no natural zero crossing, so a fuse must be specifically rated for the DC voltage and the low-overload conditions of an array. As bus voltages rise to 1500 Vdc in utility-scale plants, the fuse rating and the coordination become more demanding. Bussmann PV fuses cover the whole installation, from a 1 A string fuse to a 630 A combiner fuse, all rated for DC and available with matched holders.
String and Combiner Protection
At the module level, a small string fuse such as the PV-10A10F in a 10 by 38 mm body protects the string cable against a reverse current fault, and it is normally fitted in a finger-safe holder. At the combiner, a larger NH fuse such as the PV-100ANH1 handles the combined current, and the blade version drops into a standard NH block while the bolt-on version integrates into a standardised busbar. The standard bolt-hole pattern means one busbar design covers the whole 32 to 400 A range, which simplifies a utility-scale combiner and reduces the number of parts.
Derating for Temperature
A fuse carries less current at high ambient temperature, and a solar installation runs hot, so the string current must be checked against the fuse rating at the site temperature, not at a laboratory 25 degrees Celsius. The rule is to keep the rated current above the normal array current and below the cable and module rating, with the ambient correction applied. Getting this wrong either causes nuisance opening on a hot afternoon or leaves the cable under-protected.
Inverter and Storage Protection
On the inverter side, a high-speed fuse such as a 170M square-body fuse protects the power semiconductors, coordinated with the DC link of the converter. In a battery storage system, DC-rated fuses protect the battery strings and the power conversion system, and the same discipline applies: DC rating, ambient derating and coordination with the rest of the chain. Because a storage system is bidirectional, the fuse must clear a fault in either power-flow direction.
Working With BeiLuo
The BeiLuo FAE team helps with the string-current and ambient-derating calculation, matches each fuse to a holder of the correct DC rating and confirms the coordination. Send your array current, voltage and site temperature for a matched recommendation with stock and lead time.
